About In Clay

After a five-star, sellout run at VAULT Festival 2023, IN CLAY, a “perfectly formed and expertly polished” (The Reviews Hub) new musical comes to London for a strictly limited run.

Based on a true story, this “heartfelt, charming new musical…” (Everything Theatre) is told from a quaint Parisian apartment in the late 1930s. Marie-Berthe Cazin, a ceramist in her early 40s, eagerly awaits her estranged childhood friend, and now celebrated artist, Henrietta Tirman. Her imminent arrival pushes Marie to reflect on the great joys and sorrows of a life devoted to making art.

Hailed “a truly magnificent storyteller” (Lost in Theatreland) for the VAULT Festival production, Rosalind Ford reprises her critically-acclaimed performance as Marie Cazin. The fantastic Eleanor Walsh (Heathers UK Tour) joins the cast as the alternate.

Shortlisted for an Offies OffFest Award, the Stiles & Drewe MTI Mentorship Award and the Best New Song Prize 2023 in the last year alone, IN CLAY runs for four weeks only at Upstairs at the Gatehouse from 13 March - 7 April 2024.

The production will also be accompanied by an exhibition celebrating contemporary women ceramicists, curated by Rose Gleadell. International in scope, In Clay: The Exhibition will shine a light on the ways in which women artists are making their mark on the medium.

Amongst the twenty artists include Emily Myers, Ngozi Omeje, Ying Zheng, Venetia Berry, Maja Quille, Tessa Eastman, Iku Nishikawa and Rose Schmits.

Reviews for the VAULT Festival 2023 run:
“A poignant reflection on ambition, regrets & self-fulfilment…”

“An enchanting story full of heart…”

“But the lyrics… oh my gosh, the lyrics…”

“An experience I won’t soon forget… One of the best new musicals I have seen…”

“A delightful way to spend an hour…”

“A seamlessly blended musical that is intimate, detailed and entertaining…”

Important Information There are two special preshow events accompanying IN CLAY. As such, the show will commence 15 minutes after the advertised start time so that everyone has time to take in the preshow.

From half an hour before the start time, the theatre doors will be open for you to explore IN CLAY: THE EXHIBITION. 15 minutes later, our house band will begin an exclusive set in the auditorium. You are welcome to move between the auditorium and the exhibition space during this time.

Included in the price of your ticket is access to IN CLAY: THE EXHIBITION which is taking place in our Green Room. Curated by Rose Gleadell, this exhibition of ceramic art features work from more than 20 contemporary women artists from around the world (including The Great Pottery Throwdown technician Rose Schmits).
